Contention Evolves About ‘Oldest Soccer Club’ Claims

Any kind of soccer club that can be branded the world’s oldest professional club would carry a huge amount of club pride. Not to mention, the opportunities for sizeable amounts of sales comes with the title. The Oldest Professional Club brand has been stated many times since the birth of the sport in England. The Football Association was created in England in 1863 with the standardizing of the rules of the game taking place before the very first competitions were created.

Premier League team, Crystal Palace Football Club are now laying claim to the title of the world’s oldest professional soccer club. There is no doubt Sheffield FC is the world’s oldest soccer team having been formed in 1857, but until now Notts County was thought to be the oldest professional soccer team having formed in 1862. It may turn out that the London team could be the oldest professional soccer club as Peter Manning, the Crystal Palace official historian has discovered evidence to support this.

According to Sky Sports the club historian has uncovered evidence that the Crystal Palace team was formed in 1861. As part of the world fair being held on the Crystal Palace site in 1862, under the guidance of the Crystal Palace Company, the team was formed and began playing games.

The controversy over the role of Crystal Palace came about because the club was initially formed to play cricket with soccer games scheduled around the summer cricket season. Everyone assumed that the team stopped play in 1867 to prevent the cricket field form being damaged. The team continued to play, according to Manning over the apparent 20 year break before starting to play in the dedicated soccer stadium built by the Crystal Palace Company.

Peter Manning was praised by Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parrish for his impressive work on the history of the club that could add even more prestige to the Premier League team. The club and the Football Association share a rich history dating back to the Football Associations formation in 1863 and the clubs participation in the 1871 FA Cup. The history of the Crystal Palace Football Club starts when the team merged with the historical London County Cricket Club.
